O filho de Al Berto

Aqui há dias, um jornalista «espertalhão» descobriu que havia um filho de Al Berto. É claro que eu não lhe concedi entrevista.
No entanto, recordo ainda essa história contada por ele mesmo.
Havia na «Comunidade» de Bruxelles apenas 2 mulheres: a escritora Sophie Podolsky e a artista Joelle de La Casinière. No entanto Alberto mantinha relações homossexuais com Rhémy da RTBF e o jovem primeiro violino da Orquestra Belga que acabei por conhecer mais tarde em Sines, no Palácio.
Sophie é muito improvável ser mãe de seu filho, lendo a sua obra. Era totalmente louca e acabou cometendo suicídio atirando-se do 3º andar.
Contudo Joelle de La Casinière era uma aristocrata, o que seria das preferências de um Pidwell.
Mas Joelle acaba por partir para a India e abandonar Bruxelles, à boleia, e só retornar à pátria anos depois --- depois de pedir ao pai para lhe pagar o bilhete de avião de volta ---sem se saber o que se passou no entrementes.
Portanto, se existe um filho de Al Berto, estou mais ou menos seguro que será de Joelle de La Casinière.

O episódio, que surpreendeu os investigadores de Aveiro, deu origem à certidão que foi enviada a 2 de Novembro para o departamento liderado pela procuradora-geral adjunta Cândida Almeida por suspeitas de violação do segredo de justiça.

O PROCESSO chamado ‘Face Oculta’ tem as suas raízes longínquas num fenómeno que podemos designar por ‘deslumbramento’.

Muitos dos envolvidos no caso, a começar por Armando Vara, são pessoas nascidas na Província que vieram para Lisboa, ascenderam a cargos políticos de relevo e se deslumbraram.

Deslumbraram-se, para começar, com o poder em si próprio.

Com o facto de mandarem, com os cargos que podiam distribuir pelos amigos, com a subserviência de muitos subordinados, com as mordomias, com os carros pretos de luxo, com os chauffeurs, com os salões, com os novos conhecimentos. (…)

“Uma pessoa do círculo próximo do primeiro-ministro e que conhecia muito bem a situação do jornal e a nossa relação com o banco BCP disse-nos que os nossos problemas ficariam resolvidos se não publicássemos a segunda notícia do Freeport”, diz à SÁBADO o director do Sol, José António Saraiva – não revelando, porém, a identidade do autor da proposta. Ressalva, porém que não foi Armando Vara: “É evidente que Armando Vara era a pessoa que tinha o pelouro do Sol no BCP e que todos os assuntos relacionados com o Sol passavam directamente por ele, e isso nós sabíamos”, acrescenta José António Saraiva.

Quando o jornal Sol publicou a primeira notícia a revelar a existência de uma investigação britânica ao caso Freeport, em Janeiro de 2009, um dos directores do semanário recebeu um telefonema que podia livrar o jornal da falência. A jornalista Felícia Cabrita preparava nessa semana uma segunda manchete sobre o escândalo, que dava conta do célebre DVD inglês, onde Charles Smith acusava um ministro de receber luvas. O nome do ministro era José Sócrates, saber-se-ia mais tarde. O telefonema pretendia travar a notícia. (...)

As certidões extraídas do processo, relativas a escutas telefónicas que apanharam Vara a falar com Sócrates, estão há quatro meses nas mãos do procurador-geral da República.

Mas, "é o juiz de instrução que ordena essa destruição", acrescentou, frisando que isto mesmo consta do artigo 188.º do CPP.
"É tempo a mais, é tempo suspeito, é obvio. O tempo das coisas às vezes é tão mais importante quanto as próprias coisas, sendo certo que a memória dessas mesmas coisas é muito rápida, e basta uma notícia choque para as fazer esmorecer." (...)

Ontem à noite a SIC Notícias teve a honra de receber - no novíssimo programa de Mário Crespo, Plano Inclinado -, além de outros ilustres convidados, Medina Carreira.

Este grande senhor, Economista, Jurista, ex-Ministro das Finanças, é uma das poucas cabeças ainda lúcidas neste país sublunar. Apelidado à socapa pelos seus detractores de "pessimista", tem um Curriculum, tanto académico como de escritor e consultor, capaz de fazer corar grande parte dos diplomas 'sorteados' na loteria de Universidades independentes.
Sinceramente, para quem não viu o programa, a conversa entre estes cavalheiros foi absolutamente "assustadora". Medina Carreira, e restantes convidados, fizeram questão de enfatizar que, com a qualidade actual dos nossos políticos e a teimosia na persecução destas políticas de endividamento, aquilo que poderemos esperar a curto prazo é... a falência do país ou a nossa expulsão, pura e simples, da UE.
Para enaltecer a importância dramática da actual dívida ao estrangeiro, Mário Crespo, no final do programa, voltou-se para Medina Carreira e perguntou: «Passaram cerca de 55 minutos do nosso programa, doutor Medina Carreira, parece-me que a dívida aumentou mais 500 mil contos...» É que a actual dívida portuguesa é - mais coisa menos coisa - de 64 milhões de Euros por dia (12.800.000 contos)! Atenção máxima: Governo tenta contornar caso Vara

Desde o fim-de-semana que a ordem dentro do Governo é para redobrar a atenção e as cautelas sobre as implicações do caso "Face Oculta". As notícias do envolvimento de vários militantes do PS na investigação, alguns deles com posições destacadas em empresas públicas, forçou o núcleo duro do Governo a preparar uma resposta, de forma a distanciar-se da polémica. O primeiro passo foi dado logo na noite de sexta-feira, com José Sócrates a vincar o princípio da separação de poderes ("Não comento processos judiciais"). Mas entre os mais próximos do primeiro-ministro, desde cedo se reconheceu a necessidade de dar outros sinais públicos que demonstrassem a isenção do Governo.

Foi assim que, logo na segunda-feira se preparou terreno para a resposta. As duas maiores preocupações são os casos de José Penedos, presidente da REN (empresa maioritariamente pública) e de José Chocolate Contradanças, da Empordef (do sector da Defesa, ex-deputado do PS). No último caso, confirmou o DN, foi rapidamente ordenada uma auditoria interna, de forma a averiguar até que ponto houve envolvimento do administrador no caso. A estratégia - de pedir investigações internas - foi seguida na REN (na versão "auditoria externa", dado ser uma empresa cotada), e em todos os outros casos de empresas públicas apanhadas na rede. Caso da Brisa, onde Almerindo Marques já veio também a público explicar a averiguação.

Agora, a questão é de tempo. Argumentando com a mesma separação de poderes, o Governo evita a demissão dos responsáveis. Mas dá já sinais públicos de incómodo, sinalizando a saída aos envolvidos. Vieira da Silva disse ontem esperar "por mais informação"; Costa Pina, secretário de Estado, optou pela fórmula "o Governo acompanha a situação".

Quanto a Armando Vara, a ordem é de silêncio absoluto. Francisco Assis mostrou-o quando reagiu à suspensão do seu mandato no BCP: "O PS não tem a ver com isso, razão pela qual não tem que estar mais nem menos confortado. É uma decisão de natureza pessoal, que respeito e sobre a qual não quero fazer nenhum comentário".

Um dos maiores intelectuais do séc. XX, estudou Direito e Filosofia na Sorbonne, em Paris, e foi um dos mais profícuos Antropólogos de todos os tempos, lançando as bases da corrente estruturalista das Ciências Sociais, que influenciou gerações de investigadores.
Deixou-nos inúmeras obras mas, uma das mais proeminentes foi, com certeza, «TristesTrópicos» que Georges Bataille classificaria "é uma obra-prima que marcará uma data, não apenas na história da Etnologia mas também na história do pensamento humano. É um livro humano, um grande livro; pouca obras despertam problemas tão vastos e tão fundamentais".
Este 'calhamaço' de mais de 400 páginas -- para os interessados ou coleccionadores -- foi publicado em Fevereiro de 79 em Portugal, pelas Edições70, e a edição foi feita com todas as fotografias e desenhos do autor.
Infelizmente, só vi referência à sua vida e morte no Expresso, que lhe dedica "literalmente" meia-dúzia de linhas sob o título Óbito/Antropologia!

"I think this would be a good time for a beer," Franklin D. Roosevelt said upon signing a bill that made 3.2 percent lager legal, ahead of the full repeal of Prohibition. I hope Barack Obama will come up with some comparably witty remarks as he presides over the dismantling of our contemporary forms of prohibition—laws that prevent gay marriage, restrict cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance, and ban travel to Cuba. "You may now kiss the groom," perhaps, or a version of the comment he once made about smoking pot: "I inhaled—that was the point." (Click here to follow Jacob Weisberg)

Prohibition now is different from Prohibition then. When the 18th Amendment went into effect in 1920, it was a radical social experiment challenging a custom as old as civilization. A predictable failure—the insult to individual rights, the impossibility of enforcement, the spawning of organized crime—it came to an end in 1933. Today it is a byword for futile attempts to legislate morality and remake human nature.

Our forms of prohibition are more sins of omission than commission. Rather than trying to take away longstanding rights, they're instances of conservative laws failing to keep pace with a liberalizing society. But like Prohibition in the '20s, these restrictions have become indefensible as well as impractical, and as a result are fading fast. Within 10 years, it seems a reasonable guess that Americans will travel freely to Cuba, that all states will recognize gay unions, and that few will retain criminal penalties for marijuana use by individuals. These reforms are inevitable—not because politics has changed, but because society has.

A few reference points: in April, Obama lifted restrictions on travel and remittances by Cuban-Americans. Last month the Justice Department announced that it would no longer prosecute cases involving medical marijuana. Same-sex marriages are recognized in six states and counting. In a larger frame, loosening restrictions and lax enforcement reflect evolving social norms. Gay unions have been celebrated on the New York Times weddings page since 2002. Since George W. Bush left office, American tourists no longer worry about being prosecuted for visiting Havana without a Treasury license. In L.A., you need only tell an on-site doctor at a walk-in pot emporium that you feel anxious to walk out with a legal bag of Captain Kush.

The chief reason these prohibitions are falling away is the evolving definition of the pursuit of happiness. What's driving the legalization of gay marriage is not so much the moral argument, but the pressures from couples who want to sanctify their relationships, obtain legal benefits, and raise children in a stable environment. What's advancing the decriminalization of marijuana is not just the demand for pot as medicine but the number of adults—more than 23 million in the past year, according to the most recent government survey—who use it and don't believe they should face legal jeopardy. What's bringing the change on Cuba is not the epic failure of the 49-year-old U.S. embargo, but the demand on the part of Americans who want to go there—whether to visit relatives, prospect for post-Castro business opportunities, or sip rum drinks on the beach.

For similar reasons, there isn't likely to be any retreat on the right to have an abortion or own a gun. Popular demand for an individual right is simply too powerful to overcome. The Internet has been a crucial amplifier of all such claims. With pornography and gambling, the Web itself became an irrepressible distribution tool. When it comes to gay marriage, it has accelerated the recognition of a new civil right by serving as an organizing tool and information clearinghouse. More broadly, the freest communications medium the world has ever known has raised expectations of personal liberty. In a world where everyone has his own printing press, restrictions on personal behavior become increasingly untenable.

Politicians will continue to lag, rather than lead, these changes. Republicans face a risk in resisting the new realities. If the GOP remains the party of prohibition, it will increasingly alienate libertarian leaners and the young. Democrats face a different danger in embracing cultural transformations too eagerly. Nearly four decades after George McGovern became known as the candidate of amnesty, abortion, and acid, cultural issues are still treacherous territory for them. Why get in front of change when you can follow from a safe distance and end up with the same result?

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.

And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.

So what on Earth is going on?

Climate change sceptics, who passionately and consistently argue that man's influence on our climate is overstated, say they saw it coming.

They argue that there are natural cycles, over which we have no control, that dictate how warm the planet is. But what is the evidence for this?

During the last few decades of the 20th Century, our planet did warm quickly.

Recent research has ruled out solar influences on temperature increases

Sceptics argue that the warming we observed was down to the energy from the Sun increasing. After all 98% of the Earth's warmth comes from the Sun.

But research conducted two years ago, and published by the Royal Society, seemed to rule out solar influences.

The scientists' main approach was simple: to look at solar output and cosmic ray intensity over the last 30-40 years, and compare those trends with the graph for global average surface temperature.

And the results were clear. "Warming in the last 20 to 40 years can't have been caused by solar activity," said Dr Piers Forster from Leeds University, a leading contributor to this year's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

But one solar scientist Piers Corbyn from Weatheraction, a company specialising in long range weather forecasting, disagrees.

He claims that solar charged particles impact us far more than is currently accepted, so much so he says that they are almost entirely responsible for what happens to global temperatures.

He is so excited by what he has discovered that he plans to tell the international scientific community at a conference in London at the end of the month.

If proved correct, this could revolutionise the whole subject.

Ocean cycles

What is really interesting at the moment is what is happening to our oceans. They are the Earth's great heat stores.

According to research conducted by Professor Don Easterbrook from Western Washington University last November, the oceans and global temperatures are correlated.

The oceans, he says, have a cycle in which they warm and cool cyclically. The most important one is the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO).

For much of the 1980s and 1990s, it was in a positive cycle, that means warmer than average. And observations have revealed that global temperatures were warm too.

But in the last few years it has been losing its warmth and has recently started to cool down.

These cycles in the past have lasted for nearly 30 years.

So could global temperatures follow? The global cooling from 1945 to 1977 coincided with one of these cold Pacific cycles.

Professor Easterbrook says: "The PDO cool mode has replaced the warm mode in the Pacific Ocean, virtually assuring us of about 30 years of global cooling."

So what does it all mean? Climate change sceptics argue that this is evidence that they have been right all along.

They say there are so many other natural causes for warming and cooling, that even if man is warming the planet, it is a small part compared with nature.

But those scientists who are equally passionate about man's influence on global warming argue that their science is solid.

The UK Met Office's Hadley Centre, responsible for future climate predictions, says it incorporates solar variation and ocean cycles into its climate models, and that they are nothing new.

In fact, the centre says they are just two of the whole host of known factors that influence global temperatures - all of which are accounted for by its models.

In addition, say Met Office scientists, temperatures have never increased in a straight line, and there will always be periods of slower warming, or even temporary cooling.

What is crucial, they say, is the long-term trend in global temperatures. And that, according to the Met office data, is clearly up.

To confuse the issue even further, last month Mojib Latif, a member of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) says that we may indeed be in a period of cooling worldwide temperatures that could last another 10-20 years.

The UK Met Office says that warming is set to resume

Professor Latif is based at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University in Germany and is one of the world's top climate modellers.

But he makes it clear that he has not become a sceptic; he believes that this cooling will be temporary, before the overwhelming force of man-made global warming reasserts itself.

So what can we expect in the next few years?

Both sides have very different forecasts. The Met Office says that warming is set to resume quickly and strongly.

It predicts that from 2010 to 2015 at least half the years will be hotter than the current hottest year on record (1998).

Sceptics disagree. They insist it is unlikely that temperatures will reach the dizzy heights of 1998 until 2030 at the earliest. It is possible, they say, that because of ocean and solar cycles a period of global cooling is more likely.

One thing is for sure. It seems the debate about what is causing global warming is far from over. Indeed some would say it is hotting up.

For the better part of the Christian era in Western civilization, illustrating scenes from the Bible was not a job for artists. It was the job. As late as the Renaissance, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and their wannabes spent their days illustrating ceilings and altarpieces, painting frescoes, and chiseling images of Moses, David, and Madonna and child out of every scrap of available marble. But as the church lost some of its hold on the Western imagination, artists felt free to look elsewhere for inspiration. Now and then an artist would undertake a religious theme (Chagall, Rouault), but excepting the English painter Stanley Spencer or outsider artist Howard Finster, it's hard to think of a major modern artist who's spent much time on holy ground. It's even harder to think of an artist who could significantly alter our perceptions of the events, previously illustrated or not, in the Bible. But then, who could have foreseen that R. Crumb would tackle the Book of Genesis?

The artist credited with almost singlehandedly launching the underground-comics scene in '60s San Francisco, the cartoonist who gave us the X-rated adventures of Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural, a professed atheist, a man who fantasizes about getting piggyback rides from big-legged women (and then draws and publishes these fantasies), and, last but surely most horrifying to the people whose nightmares Crumb haunts, an American who emigrates to France and likes it—this is the man a publisher has entrusted with the task of illustrating the first book of the Bible.

Unlikely as it might seem, this was trust well repaid. Without a trace of irony, and certainly no mockery, Crumb delivers a literal—one might even say traditional—rendition of the events in the Judeo-Christian account of Creation and its aftermath. Frame by frame, comic-book fashion, The Book of Genesis shows a white-bearded, patriarchal God creating the heavens and the earth and all that walk upon it. We see Adam and Eve exiled from the Garden of Eden. We observe the first murder, as Cain kills his brother, and then Noah and the Flood, the travails of Abraham—every verse of every chapter carefully rendered, right through to the story of Joseph and the Israelite migration to Egypt.

What distinguishes this version is its meticulous realism. The beginning is a little spongy—through no fault of Crumb's: there are, after all, two overlapping and not entirely synchronous Creation myths in the opening pages—but as soon as the story reaches solid ground, that is, as soon as Adam and Eve are banished from the garden, the narrative finds its footing. We see the story as we read it, and what we see are camels and grizzled, hairy-legged herdsmen, watering troughs and tents delineated right down to every flap and peg, women laboring through childbirth, bowls and stoppered jugs, dusty towns and the towering palace of the pharaoh. Abraham and his descendants move through a sun-baked, unforgiving landscape, earning their crust through the sweat of their brows, and the visual precision with which their struggles are rendered endows them with a nobility only hinted at in the text. God may not be in the details, but his chosen people surely are.

It is one thing, for example, to read that Abraham and Sarah were old and childless. It is altogether different to watch them age and to witness the sadness in their faces at the thought of childlessness. As drawn by Crumb, Abraham and his descendants are not just figures in a story. First and last, they are fully human and full of frailty. When God orders Abraham to slaughter his son, Isaac, we see a horrified—and angry?—old man and a helpless, tearful boy, and suddenly what has always been an unsettling tale becomes truly horrific. This has always been a story about faith being tested, but there is nothing abstract about Crumb's version. Instead, his realism restores the mystery at the heart of the tale: how could a man believe in something so strongly that he would kill the child he wanted more than anything else?

Even the most famously tedious passages—those genealogical lists familiarly known as "the begots"—become fascinating when Crumb supplies thumbnail sketches of every man listed, instilling a vivid sense of humanity in what is, on the page, merely a list of names. It is one more instance of the artist's ability to make us see that, however shrouded by time, these were people before they were part of an oft-told tale. This version of Genesis works so well because it is not reverential. The artist always honors the story, never dodging or minimizing the occasions when God or one of his emissaries enters the action, but by keeping everything as grittily real as possible, Crumb achieves a miracle all his own: he makes one of the world's oldest stories new again.

Fax fala em dois milhões de libras em «luvas»

O fax é altamente confidencial. Foi escrito a 17 de Dezembro de 2001, um dia depois das eleições que levaram à demissão de António Guterres e consequente queda do Governo do Partido Socialista.

Keith Payne é quem escreve a carta a dois dos homens fortes do Freeport em Londres: Ric Dattani e Gary Dawson. Payne é o inglês que, em Portugal, mantém informados os dois administradores do Freeport.

No fax, a que a TVI teve acesso, Keith Payne fala da mudança política em Portugal e da preocupação de José Sócrates já não ser Ministro do Ambiente: «Os efeitos dos acontecimentos do fim-de-semana, com os revezes sofridos pelo PS, nomeadamente nas eleições autárquicas, incluindo Lisboa, e a demissão do Governo de Guterres significam que Sócrates deixou de ser Ministro do Ambiente e que vai haver um compasso de espera de quatro ou cinco meses até que for eleito um novo Governo e nomeado um novo Ministro».

Rick Datani, o receptor do fax, reenvia-o logo de seguida para Jonathan Rawnsley, um administrador acima dele na hierarquia da empresa e acrescenta ao documento anotações escritas pelo seu próprio punho.

No final da carta é explicitamente referida a existência de subornos, concretamente dois milhões de libras em luvas. À época, qualquer coisa como três milhões e duzentos mil euros.

Ponto 4

«Jonathan, este é o fulano que me telefonou e sabe do suborno de dois milhões de libras. Sublinhei alguns pontos interessantes a partir do ponto 4. Se o Parlamento é dissolvido até às eleições, o secretário de Estado não pode aprovar nem rejeitar nada?»

Vamos, então, ver o ponto 4, para o qual Rick Datani chama a atenção do seu superior hierárquico. A frase sublinhada é esta: «Sócrates deixou de ser Ministro do Ambiente».

Para além do sublinhado no ponto 4, Rick Datani acrescenta ainda uma outra frase onde reafirma a existência de subornos. Sem acrescentos, a frase inicial era esta: «Se estamos face a uma possível rejeição (chumbo) do estudo de impacto ambiental, é pouco provável ser possível inverter uma tal decisão seja em que circunstância for, a dois dias da sua rejeição (chumbo) formal por parte do Ministro do Ambiente».

Datani acrescenta, novamente pela sua própria mão, a frase: «Antes do suborno».

O que fica, portanto, claro é que administradores do Freeport não só sabiam da existência de subornos, como estavam dispostos a pagá-los. Dois milhões de libras é o que parece estar em causa no licenciamento do outlet de Alcochete.

Este fax é um documento a que a polícia inglesa deu muita importância, a ponto de interrogar várias pessoas sobre o mesmo, mais especificamente sobre a nota de rodapé escrita à mão. Os ingleses queriam saber a quem se destinava os dois milhões de libras de subornos.

Charles Smith admitiu apenas uma anterior tentativa de suborno, não consumada, feita por um escritório de advogados. Quanto a Keith Payne, confirmou à polícia ter ouvido falar de pagamentos corruptos através de Charles Smith. A polícia inglesa não conseguiu, até ao momento, ouvir Rick Datani, o homem que escreveu precisamente a nota de rodapé e onde fala explicitamente de «bribe», ou seja, luvas ou suborno.

A TVI procurou obter uma reacção de Pedro Silva Pereira, secretário de Estado do Ordenamento do Território à altura, bem como de Rui Gonçalves, secretário de Estado do Ambiente nessa época.

Também procurou obter uma reacção de José Sócrates, à altura Ministro do Ambiente. Foram, por isso, endereçadas estas três perguntas , que não obtiveram resposta.

Lizards filmed 'walking on water'

Remarkable slow-motion footage has been taken of two lizards that seem to do the impossible - walk on water.

A high-definition film, shot at 2,000 frames per second, shows a brown basilisk lizard running across the surface of a pond in Belize.

More footage shows how a species of gecko is so tiny that it can walk across a puddle without breaking the water's surface tension.

These amazing feats are captured for the BBC natural history series Life.

The group of animals known as basilisk lizards commonly lives along the edge of rivers running through rainforests, eating small insects among the foliage.

Because they run so fast they create a bubble as their feet hit the water and then they push off from this bubble before it bursts

The lizards need to bask in the sun to warm up each day, which leaves them vulnerable to being caught by predators, such as large birds of prey hunting from the air, or carnivores such as cats living on the jungle floor.

So the lizards have evolved an extraordinary escape mechanism.

They drop into the water and then run across it, earning the lizards their nickname, the "Jesus" or "Jesus Christ" lizard.

Exactly how they do so is revealed by the slow-motion, high-definition footage taken at 2,000 frames per second.

"Because they run so fast they create a bubble as their feet hit the water and then they push off from this bubble before it bursts," says Simon Blakeney, a producer on the Life series who helped direct and film the footage of both reptiles.

"They can only run at that speed. If they were going any slower, for example, they wouldn't stay upright, they would slip into the water and would have to swim."

Mr Blakeney and his colleagues filmed brown basilisk lizards (Basiliscus vittatus) running across ponds and rivers in the rainforest in Belize, around 60km from Belize City.

Antioxidants - Diabetes Connection

In a study in the journal Cell Metabolism, some mice given antioxidants were more likely to become diabetic, because free radicals help muscle cells respond to insulin. Karen Hopkin reports.

You’ve no doubt heard of “free radicals”, those nasty chemicals that seem to contribute to heart disease, cancer and all sorts of human ailments. Maybe you even take antioxidant vitamins to help get rid of these unwanted toxins. Well, maybe you shouldn’t. Because a new study in the journal Cell Metabolism suggests that, when it comes to diabetes, free radicals can be good for you—and and antioxidants might make things worse.
Free radicals can damage vital cell components, and our bodies produce them naturally as we metabolize food. So, it stands to reason if we eat lots and lots of food, we’ll make tons of radicals. And put ourselves at risk of becoming seriously obese, and developing diabetes. All of which is bad.
But it’s actually not that simple. You see, in addition to being potentially harmful, free radicals are also necessary for cells to communicate. In particular, they help muscle cells respond to insulin. So, mice that can’t get rid of their free radicals actually do well on a high-fat diet, and it’s only when they’re given antioxidants that they get diabetes. If all that makes your head hurt, go for a nice walk. Because exercise is still good for you.

The revelations in his 2005 autobiography “The Bad Life” have come back to haunt Mr Mitterrand after he emerged as one of the most vociferous defenders of Roman Polanski, the film director currently detained in Switzerland in connection with an outstanding conviction for unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in the US in 1977.

In his book, Mr Mitterrand, the nephew of the late Socialist president François Mitterrand, wrote: “I got into the habit of paying for boys...All these rituals of the market for youths, the slave market excite me enormously.

“One could judge this abominable spectacle from a moral standpoint but it pleases me beyond the reasonable.”

Curiously, there was little outcry when the book was published in 2005. However, Mr Mitterrand’s tastes were brought to the fore on Monday by Marine Le Pen, daughter of the far-right National Front leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen, on a political chat show.

Miss Le Pen read out a passage in which Mr Mitterrand wrote: “The profusion of very attractive and immediately available young boys puts me in a state of desire that I no longer need to hinder nor hide...as I know that I will not be refused.”

Her call for his resignation has become an internet hit.

On Tuesday, the opposition Socialists joined the chorus of outrage. Benoît Hamon, the party spokesman, said: “As a minister of culture he has drawn attention to himself by defending a film maker and he has written a book where he said he took advantage of sexual tourism. To say the least, I find it shocking.”

Mr Mitterrand responded on Tuesday by saying he was “flabbergasted”.

“If the National Front drag me through the mud then it is an honour for me.

“If a leftist politician drags me through the mud then it is a humiliation for him,” he added.

Xavier Bertrand, the head of Mr Sarkozy’s right-wing UMP party, defended Mr Mitterrand. “The Socialists are now on the same ground as the extreme right, it’s incredible. One is not obliged to use private life for political ends,” he said.

Mr Mitterrand, who joined the cabinet in June, was considered a great catch for Mr Sarkozy and proof of his “open” style of government; the minister comes from a grand Socialist family and is admired by many in the Left-wing cultural establishment. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the first lady, was said to have had a hand in his nomination.

Politicians from across the spectrum criticised his vitriolic attack on the arrest of Mr Polanski, a French citizen who US authorities wish to extradite over his 1977 conviction. Mr Mitterrand initially described the pursuit of the director as “callous” and “absolutely horrifying”, but then toned down his criticism.

Victim or Perpetrator?: The Tragic Case of Roman Polanski

Era of Excess

The case -- the People vs. Roman Polanski -- is filed under case No. A-334,139 at the Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles. The file, which was created in March 1977 and has now grown to 10,000 pages, represents one of the oldest unresolved cases at the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Los Angeles was a wild place at the time. A few young directors and actors had stirred up a revolution in Hollywood. For the first time, it was not just producers and accountants who were determining which films were to be made. Hollywood's new stars were people like Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Warren Beatty, and the films the studios produced told stories of male prostitutes, brutal cops and psychopathic taxi drivers. Hollywood was arguably never as good as it was in that era.

But it was also a time of unbridled rebellion. In an interview with Playboy, Nicholson described how he would dust cocaine on his penis before having sex, while Beatty told a TV interviewer about his bad habits and his penchant for excess. They stylized Hollywood as a place where morality was suspended, posing with the most beautiful women and living in a world of hubris and megalomania.

Shadowy Realm

Polanski was considered one of the most dazzling figures of the new Hollywood. His films seemed to emerge from some shadowy realm. In "Rosemary's Baby," he had Mia Farrow tied to a bed and raped by the devil. In "Chinatown," a film about corruption in Los Angeles, Polanski played a gangster who slits open Nicholson's nose. In the film, evil prevails in the end, and when Polanski was later asked what would have happened to the gangster he played, he said: "He would probably be in Mexico, screwing virgins."

There were no limits. The sexual revolution had changed everything. Playboy featured pictures of an 11-year-old girl, 12-year-old Brooke Shields played a whore in Louis Malle's film "Pretty Baby," and the soft-focus films of David Hamilton, in which he portrayed young girls as nymphs, reached a mainstream audience. Somehow it all seemed relatively normal at the time.(...)

I Missed the Bus, but Not the Spirit

It could have been that early on the morning of Aug. 15, 1969, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt and carrying only a fringed suede purse with a few extra T-shirts, some underwear and about $50 in cash, I hopped into a VW bus driven by a guy I hardly knew -- a friend of a friend -- and headed north to Upstate New York. His loosely issued invitation had come only a few days before: He had extra tickets to a three-day rock concert.

But instead, on the morning of Aug. 15, 1969, I had been employed for exactly 10 days in my first job since college graduation that May, an editing job in downtown Washington that I desperately wanted for professional reasons (I feared I would otherwise be consigned to a typing pool) and financial ones (I was moving into a group house in September and needed the first month's rent).

As that VW bus rolled north, I was sitting in a cubicle, part wall and part frosted glass, at a desk with a high-intensity light, a stack of typewritten manuscripts and four colored pencils: black for editing, blue to mark the text to be typeset in 8-point type, red for 10-point type and green for 12-point type (headlines!). I was wearing a skirt, blouse, stockings and shoes -- women couldn't wear pants to that office. I might as well have been bound with rope.

All of the newfound freedom of having graduated from college, of being able to choose my path, to live independently, now seemed a sham. I had driven myself smack dab into a brick wall of obligation and responsibility. Instead of the shackles of required courses, term papers and exams, I was chained to a new world with an even greater burden of responsibility. No one was helping me with tuition, room and board. I had no vacation, no sick leave. Missing a day of work was not like cutting a class. If I fled to Woodstock, I could get fired.

My generation seemed on two tracks: those who needed a job more than freedom, and those who didn't. I was barreling down the first road, wishing I was on the second.

All day my head was sailing along the highway in that VW bus (with eight-track tapes) as my body trudged over to the carryout for some limp sandwich that I ate at my desk. The L4 ride home up Connecticut Avenue was a bitter reminder that I was definitely on the wrong bus.

Would I have been ready for Woodstock, for a long weekend of camping, chaos, wet sleeping bags, partying, sex, drugs, and rock and roll? Probably not. I had come of age but had missed the first wave of the youth revolution, a fact that seemed very regrettable then -- but not now, since I have since come to understand how much fuel is required to survive over the long term.

Was Woodstock a haven for the overindulged, self-important youth of 1969? Some of my friends think so. But I think that, to its credit, pieces of Woodstock's own crazy world broke off and spun their way into a larger world, especially the one in which I dutifully participated; for about 10 years after Woodstock, its atmospherics were infectious.

The Who, Joe Cocker, Richie Havens, wet sleeping bags and chaos came into my life in other ways. After Woodstock, we knew we could abandon the car on the way to a concert, then hitch a ride back afterward and find the car still waiting for us. We could show up without tickets to see The Who and somehow find ourselves at the front of the crowd, near the stage. And the car that we had left back in the ditch? How did that happen? Who knows, who cares? When we got back to it, people helped us tow it out, as we knew they would.

In those days after Woodstock, I kept my job, paid my taxes, acted responsibly. Yet I would sometimes leave the house without a plan, a destination or even a map. I'd book a one-way fare and worry later about the return. One night I left my fringed suede purse on a coat hook in a bar. I got home before I realized it was gone. But the house was unlocked, so I didn't need a key; my wallet was almost empty of cash and I had no major credit cards -- no one did. There was no such thing as identity theft. I never even went back for that purse. I had lost nothing.

I don't regret that cubicle-bound choice I made on Aug. 15, 1969. But, 40 years later, sometimes I think I could use a little Woodstock in my life.

As «quimeras» em mitologia, são monstros lendários com cabeça de leão, corpo de cabra e cauda de dragão. Em português figurado significa: fantasia, ilusão, utopia ou um aburdo.
Relendo o livro do Nobel da Bioengenharia, Renato Dulbecco, sobre a medicina e a moral, na era do DNA, cruzei-me com um curioso Capítulo que se intitulava «O Zoo das Quimeras».
Quando, no início de 1984, a revista 'Nature' publicou a notícia, muitas pessoas dificilmente acreditaram nela. Uma ovelha com chifres de cabra? Parecia uma piada, mas a seriedade da fonte não deixava margem para dúvidas. A estranha criatura fora baptizada de «geep», uma fusão das palavras inglesas 'goat' (cabra) e 'sheep' (ovelha) --- poder-se-ia traduzir em português por «ovabra» ou «cabrelha» --- e tinha nascido num laboratório de Cambridge. Jamais se tinha visto algo deste género: um verdadeiro puzzle zoológico, que agrupava num só corpo os traços de duas espécies diferentes. Em suma, uma quimera, como as que povoavam os mitos gregos e os bestiários medievais, como as sereias, os sátiros ou os centauros.
Como pudera surgir um tal prodígio? Sabe-se que os animais de espécies diferentes não se podem cruzar, mas existem excepções: são possíveis, por exemplo, os híbridos entre cavalo e burro (pode nas cer uma mula ou um macho). A fecundação artificial pode cruzar, dentro dos limites, uma zebra com um cavalo e criar um «zebralo», ou um tigre com um leão, criando um «tigrão».
O segredo no caso da «cabrelha» consistiu na técnica de embryo transfer (tranferência de embriões). Os investigadores em Cambridge tinham pegado nos óvulos fecundados de uma cabra e de uma ovelha num estado muito precoce de desenvolvimento (isto é, quando cada um deles só tinha tido tempo de formar um embrião de poucas células, todas iguais) e tinham-nos combinado entre si de modo a constituirem um único embrião. Depois tinham-no transferido para o útero da ovelha, que levou a gravidez até ao fim, tendo um filho-quimera.
Este método já tinha sio experimentado com sucesso em diferentes raças de coelhos, ratos e ovelhas. Hoje em dia, os biólogos usam quimeras parciais, como a «codolinha», resultante de um implante de um fragmento de embrião de codorniz no da galinha. (...) Inventada nos anos 60 por Tim Rawson e pelos seus colegas do Instituto de Fisiologia Animal e Investigação Genética da Universidade de Cambridge, bem depressa ela foi aproveitada pelos criadores de gado de todo o Mundo. (...) Deste modo, para obter bovinos de qualidade e, consequentemente, bifes mais saborosos, já não é necessário um elevado número de vacas de raça: bastam pouquíssimas, que se fazem fecundar com esperam congelado de touros seleccionados e depois faz-se prosseguir a gravidez em vacas comuns.

Grippe A et théories du complot

Faut-il en parler pour mieux en rire – ou en pleurer – au risque de les attiser ou les ignorer ? Le dilemme est toujours le même quand il s’agit de théorie du complot et autres délires conspirationnistes. La grippe A, comme des tonnes d’autres phénomènes, suscite son lot de salades sur le mode “on nous cache tout”.

Soyons clairs. Il est évident que la grippe A H1N1 n’est pas un cataclysme pour tout le monde. Les grandes firmes pharmaceutiques signent chaque jour ou presque de juteux contrats avec des Etats soudain solvables, beaucoup d’entreprises y voient une aubaine (cf. les patrons de call-center en Grande-Bretagne) et les gouvernants ne manquent pas de montrer à l’opinion qu’ils “agissent”, trop contents de reléguer au second plan la crise, les scandales et leur propre impuissance. Mais ceux qui dominent le monde ont-ils sciemment causé cette pandémie ? Un petit tour sur le Net montre qu’un tas de gens le pensent. Sans doute les mêmes qui pensent qu’aucun avion n’a marché sur la lune et que Neil Armstrong ne s’est pas écrasé sur le Pentagone…

>Les illuminatis et les francs-maçons ?

Nous avons reçu il y a quelques jours un communiqué de presse d’une association du Sud de la France. Ce document bourré de fautes nous informait que ladite association venait de déposer une plainte auprès du Parquet de Nice à l’encontre de l’OMS, de Barack Obama, de laboratoires, etc.

Les illuminatis et les “FMs”, comprenez francs-maçons, auraient élaboré cette grippe pour réduire drastiquement la population mondiale. Pour que les illuminatis puissent vivre pénards, rien qu’entre eux.

Lu dans un forum : “J’ai vu des milliers de documentaires sur le sujet des illuminatis, du nouvel ordre mondial, le 11 septembre.. Et aussi plein sur d’autres sujet comme l’univers, l’apparition de la vie sur terre, l’argent, les guerres, 2012.. Quand on dit que ‘’tout est lié'’, c’est vrai . 11 septembre=nouvel ordre mondial, crise économique= nouvel ordre monètaire, gripe porcine=93% de la population doit mourrir”

Il existe plusieurs versions du complot américain. Selon l’une d’elles, les Américains ont conçu “Uu virus composé d’un COCKTAIL de gènes inconnus et d’origines diverses : une jolie bombe de laboratoire sans doute !“.

Ici aussi, il s’agit d’éliminer une bonne partie des hommes. Ou bien de remettre en selle les laboratoires pharmaceutiques éprouvés par la crise.

Lu sur un blog : “Qui dit grippe A, prévoit une grippe B, une C, et ainsi de suite jusqu’à parvenir à ses fins.”

>Les démocrates ?

C’est la faute à Obama !

Lu sur 20 minutes : le petit commentaire lâché par la représentante républicaine Michele Bachmann : “Je trouve ça intéressant que l’épidémie de grippe porcine des années 70 ait eu lieu sous la présidence de Jimmy Carter, un autre président démocrate. Je n’accuse pas le président Obama, je trouve juste que c’est une coïncidence intéressante.”

>Une tentative d’assassinat ?

Obama, encore, mais il serait victime cette fois-ci.

Lu sur un blog : “Obama a été reçu au musée d’anthropologie de Mexico par un archéologue, M. Felipe Solis, mort subitement le lendemain. Ce bon monsieur aurait dû infecter le président des Etats-Unis. Echec total, Obama va très bien.”

Au passage. Qui serait l’assassin assez con pour utiliser un virus de la grippe pour tuer quelqu’un ? Une personne sur mille meurt de la grippe ! Et Barack Obama est sans doute la personne la mieux soignée au monde avec sa cohorte de médecins aux petits oignons. Question subsidiaire, pourquoi les services secrets russes ont préféré tuer l’espion Litvinenko au polonium 210 ? Une balle dans la tête, c’était pas plus simple ?

Pour l’argent ou pour tuer tout le monde. Avec une référence foireuse à un parchemin datant de 1 200 ans.

The Perseids occur when the Earth passes through dusty cometary debris

Skygazers are getting ready to watch the annual Perseid meteor shower, which peaks on Wednesday.

The Perseid shower occurs when the Earth passes through a stream of dusty debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle.

As this cometary "grit" strikes our atmosphere, it burns up, often creating streaks of light across the sky.

This impressive spectacle appears to originate from a point called a "radiant" in the constellation of Perseus - hence the name Perseid.

"Earth passes through the densest part of the debris stream sometime on 12 August. Then, you could see dozens of meteors per hour," said Bill Cooke of Nasa's meteoroid environment office.

No special equipment is required to watch the sky show. Astronomers say binoculars might help, but will also restrict the view to a small part of the sky.

The Perseids can appear in any part of the sky, but their tails all point back to the radiant in the constellation Perseus.

In the UK, the best times to see the Perseids are likely to be on the morning of 12 August before dawn and from late evening on the 12th through to the early hours of the 13 August.

This year, light from the last quarter Moon will interfere significantly with the view.

The rock and dust fragments which cause the shower were left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle when it last came near the Sun.

The comet orbits the Sun once every 130 years and last swept through the inner Solar System in 1992.

O ESTRANHO CASO DOS «CEGOS» DO HOSPITAL SANTA-MARIA

Um caso de Agatha Christie.
O mais surpreendente é a contradição dos relatórios do INFARMED e a da Ordem dos Farmacêuticos.
O que é certo é que há aqui «uma mãozinha da reacça». As FARMACÊUTICAS.... e os seus interesses! É pura e simplesmente abominável.
Ninguém duvida do profissionalismo impecável da intervenção cirúrgica dos médicos. Fizeram o seu trabalho baseados na confiança da farmácia do Hospital que lhes forneceram a droga que foi pedida. Mas, segundo parece, a droga cedida não era aquela que deveria ser administrada.
PORQUÊ?
Quando os interesses económicos podem, ou não, boicotar, intervenções cirúrgicas para dramatizar situações de «mais valias» financeiras para o funcionamento de uma rede --- que toda a gente conhece --- de ganhos «astronómicos» a nível planetário, para conseguirem situar-se dentro do controlo do sistema, toda a gente pode pensar não importa o quê!
A «Gripe A», que foi falada inicialmente, ser um produto criado em laboratório e do qual "se perdeu o controlo", e é minimamente incompreensível, porque junta a gripe das «aves» à «gripe suína», uma espécie de PNEUMÓNICA espanhola, parece ser um factor para libertar as Farmacêuticas do «FLOPP» de não terem conseguido esvaziar o investimento que foi feito para a «gripe das aves» que afinal não sucedeu como «pandemia».
A produção da «gripe» foi controlada, isso é evidente, faz poucos danos a quem não está sob alguma doença imunodeficiente, ou com doenças crónicas respiratórias. Mas é um fenómeno vastamente incontrolável quando começar a ser difundida a nível aéreo.
Mas voltando ao caso da «aviltação» do produto utilizado para o tratamento do «Caso dos Cegos de Santa Maria».
PORQUÊ?
Não há aqui alguma coisa que faz tocar as sirenes em atenção às Farmacêuticas? Não são demasiadas coincidências e enganos numa Ciência que se sabe tão correcta?

Cinema: Realizador Pedro Almodóvar rejeita modelo de família defendido pelo Vaticano

Berlim, 06 Ago (Lusa) - O cineasta espanhol Pedro Almodóvar sente-se uma espécie de Deus e considera que o retrato da sociedade actual dos seus filmes está muito mais próximo da realidade do que o modelo de família defendido pelo Vaticano.

"Um director é uma espécie de Deus. Digo-o eu, que não sou crente", sustenta Almodóvar, numa entrevista publicada hoje no semanário alemão Die Zeit, coincidindo com a estreia do seu último filme, "Abraços desfeitos".

"No meu mundo cinematográfico não tem absolutamente nenhum papel o eco de que o Papa só reconhece a variante católica da família", afirmou Almodóvar.

O realizador lembrou que há mais de 20 anos roda películas nas quais "uma família é um grupo de pessoas, centrado num pequeno ser, que se querem e satisfazem as suas necessidades, sem importar se se trata de pais separados, travestis, transsexuais ou monjas com SIDA".

Almodóvar sugere na entrevista que, de vez em quando, o Papa "deveria sair, passear fora do Vaticano e ver bem o que é uma família de hoje".

"É uma absoluta loucura não reconhecer como vivem hoje em dia milhões de pessoas", sustenta, para concluir: "As minhas famílias são mais reais que as do Papa, porque não vivem de acordo com nenhum tipo de dogma, mas sim de acordo com os seus compromissos com a vida".

Almodóvar foi segunda-feira a Berlim acompanhado da actriz Penélope Cruz, para a estreia do seu novo filme, que tem recebido críticas muito boas e que na Alemanha chegou a ser considerado perfeito do ponto de vista formal.

Será que temos aqui uma primeira ideia para o programa eleitoral do PSD? Desconfio que na sua politica de verdade isto não passe de mais uma treta, bastando saber que quem “aprimorou” esta justiça de compadrio e que não funciona foi o seu patrono Cavaco Silva. Aliás, basta olhar para a lista de deputados, que ela criou, para ver que ser acusado de corrupção ou de ilegalidades não é suficiente para os retirar de lá. Muito provavelmente será até uma das razões para dela fazerem parte.

DESCODIFICAÇÃO INÉDITA DO MAPA GENÉTICO DO VIRÚS «HIV»

Uma nova técnica permitiu pela primeira vez a descodificação de todo o mapa genético do vírus HIV, que dá origem à sida, permitindo que os cientistas tenham uma "visão geral" desse genoma e abrindo caminho a novos tratamentos.

A técnica pode conduzir a tratamentos não só para a sida, mas também contra outros vírus, como os das gripes, disseram investigadores.

"Estamos esperançados de que a técnica abrirá muitas novas oportunidades para a descoberta de medicamentos", disse Kevin Weeks, o investigador da Universidade da Carolina do Norte (Estados Unidos) que comandou a pesquisa.

"Há muitas coisas que podemos tentar", acrescentou.

O vírus HIV/sida integra os chamados RNA-vírus, tal como os vírus da influenza (gripe), da poliomielite e da constipação comum. Isso significa que o seu genoma se compõe de RNA, e não de DNA.

O DNA depende de blocos chamados nucleotídeos, que transmitem a informação sobre duas tiras. Essas unidades básicas são identificadas pelas letras A, C, T e G. Já o RNA tem apenas uma tira e depende não só dos nucleotídeos, mas também de um complexo padrão de dobras para transmitir a informação.

A equipa de Weeks desenvolveu um novo método químico chamado Shape ("forma"), que forma uma imagem não só dos nucleotídeos do RNA, mas também das formas e dobras da tira de RNA.

Os métodos de imagens usados até agora, como a cristalografia por raios-X, capturam a posição precisa de cada átomo, mas só numa pequena área de cada vez. O Shape obtém uma visão mais geral, mas não a nível atómico, explicou Weeks.

"A técnica é parecida com a acção de reduzir o zoom de um mapa e obter uma visão mais ampla da paisagem, se bem que à custa dos detalhes", escreveu Hashim Al Hashimi, da Universidade de Michigan, num comentário sobre a descoberta, que foi publicada na revista Nature.

A German court has ordered a neo-Nazi group to vacate an abandoned hotel it squatted two weeks ago in the town of Fassberg. Local residents have been relieved -- temporarily -- of the risk of the far-right political activists staining their town's reputation.

After almost two weeks of occupying a deserted hotel in the small town of Fassberg in the northern German state of Lower Saxony, a local court provisionally ruled Tuesday that the neo-Nazis had unlawfully broken into the building and ordered them to leave.

The group of extremists, led by the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) deputy leader Jürgen Rieger, had previously refused to leave -- saying that they had an official lease on the 80-room property, which they intended to use as an education and training center.

The owners of the building, however, are heavily indebted, and the hotel went into receivership just one day after the lease was signed, providing the basis for a messy legal battle.

Although the official receiver had locked up the property, Rieger forcefully broke into it by drilling out the locks, claiming to be the holder of a legal lease contract. Flags and posters, with slogans like "we've come for good" and "the press is lying" have plastered the walls of the building since, intimidating members of the public and local politicians.

In recent days, as many as 350 local residents have gathered near the property to protest the presence of the neo-Nazis. When the group vacated the premises without force on Tuesday, local residents cheered, relieved that their community -- at least for the time being -- would not be tarnished by the far-right radicals.

"The building looked so dead, it was so sad," pensioner Marianne Glagla told German public television station ARD. "Those who say they weren't scared are lying," Karl-Heinz Hufenbach, who also lives in the town with a local population of less than 8,000 thousand, added.

A Neo-Nazi Affinity for the Region

For some, though, the squatting came as no surprise. "Rieger seems to have an affinity to our region," local politician Angelika Cremer of the Social Democratic Party told the broadcaster.

In 1978, Rieger took out a lease on a farm in a nearby village, which served as a training center for right-wing youths for almost two decades. Bergen-Belsen, the site of one of the largest concentration camps operated under the Nazi regime, is just a short drive away. This is thought to be one of the things the neo-Nazis, many of whom are Holocaust deniers, to the area.

Rieger and his supporters had occupied the hotel since the end of July. Over the past two weeks, residents had repeatedly reported hearing gun shots. Although no weapons were found during a property search earlier this week, police confiscated mace cans and truncheons.

Rieger has been involved in similar real estate games in the past. On previous occasions, neo-Nazi groups led by the Hamburg-based lawyer have attempted or threatened to purchase properties, such as a hotel or bar, at an inflated price, prompting intimidated locals to make a higher bid for the property to keep the NPD away. In some instances, critics believe, the neo-Nazis have actually turned a profit with their alleged property speculation.

The property at the center of the current dispute was valued at €950,000 three years ago, but Rieger reportedly offered to pay €1.2 million. The sale never went through because of ongoing negotiations with another investor, who is willing to offer €750,000 to convert it into a health center. This idea has been backed by the community as well as the village's 62-year-old mayor, Hans-Werner Schlitte, who described the facility conversion as a "perfect solution."

"There is no lack of hotels in the area, and a health care facility could be useful," Schlitte added.

The official receiver is arguing that the €600 monthly rent Rieger is required to pay on the lease contract is too low considering the market value of the hotel and the price the NPD activist has said he would be willing to pay and that it penalizes creditors.

A court must still make a final decision on whether Rieger's lease contract is valid. Until then, the locals of Fassberg are simply glad that they no longer have to make detours around the hotel to avoid the black-clad neo-Nazis and their dogs.

Isaltino Morais, que foi ministro das Cidades, Ordenamento do Teritório e Ambiente durante o governo presidido por Durão Barroso, foi condenado, no Tribunal de Sintra, a sete anos de prisão, ao pagamento de uma indemnização de 463 mil euros ao Fisco e perda de mandato, por fraude fiscal, abuso de poder e corrupção passiva para acto ilícito e branqueamento de capitais.

Venezuela : l'État occupe des usines de café

Le gouvernement socialiste du Venezuela a ordonné, dans la matinée du lundi 3 août, l'occupation temporaire des usines de deux producteurs locaux de café, accusés notamment de pratiques frauduleuses et "monopolistiques" à l'origine de la pénurie de ce produit dans le pays.

"Le gouvernement bolivarien a occupé toutes les usines du pays de la compagnie Fama de America et de Café Madrid pour garantir l'approvisionnement du peuple vénézuélien", a expliqué à la télévision officielle le ministre de l'agriculture, Elias Jaua. Ces occupations s'inscrivent dans le cadre de la loi sur la souveraineté alimentaire, promulguée en fin d'année dernière par le président antilibéral Hugo Chavez, qui renforce le contrôle de la production des entreprises du secteur, afin de lutter contre les pénuries. Dans le cadre de sa révolution socialiste, le président vénézuélien a déjà nationalisé plusieurs secteurs clés de l'économie, comme l'énergie ou les télécommunications.

PRATIQUES DÉLOYALES ET MONOPOLISTIQUES

Selon une association, l'Alliance agroalimentaire, la production de café est passée d'1 400 000 quintaux en 1998 à 900 000 aujourd'hui. Le ministre a indiqué que l'occupation des usines devrait durer trois mois, le temps de procéder à un audit complet des deux entreprises. "Si lors de l'audit, nous démontrons qu'il y a eu de la contrebande, des rétentions, des pratiques déloyales et monopolistiques, nous pourrions envisager la nationalisation de ces entreprises", a-t-il précisé.

Ces derniers mois, le gouvernement vénézuélien a ordonné l'occupation et l'expropriation de plusieurs entreprises productrices d'aliments de base, comme le riz ou les pâtes, pour tenter de mettre fin aux pénuries chroniques. Depuis 2003, le premier exportateur latino-américain de pétrole a mis en place un strict régime de contrôle des prix pour les aliments de base. Les producteurs dénoncent régulièrement cette mesure, affirmant que les prix ne couvrent même pas leurs coûts de production.

Lisboa, 03 Ago (Lusa) - A descoberta da ligação molecular responsável pela perda de memória associada ao consumo prolongado de cannabis, divulgada no domingo, poderá ajudar a identificar alvos terapêuticos para a sua reversão, disse hoje à Lusa um neurocientista português.

Segundo Nuno Sousa, do Domínio de Neurociências do Instituto de Investigação em Ciências da Vida e Saúde (ICVS) da Universidade do Minho, a descoberta é relevante porque não se conheciam em detalhe os mecanismos envolvidos nas já conhecidas perturbações cognitivas, ao nível da memória, relacionadas com o consumo de cannabis.

O trabalho, da autoria de investigadores de uma universidade de Barcelona, foi publicado na última edição da revista Nature Neuroscience.

"Com este estudo, ficámos a entender de forma muito mais precisa os mecanismos moleculares que estão na base dos défices cognitivos associados ao consumo relativamente prolongado de canabinóides, nomeadamente os receptores e as cascatas de sinalização envolvidos", explicou à Lusa o neurocientista português, um dos autores de um trabalho publicado na semana passada na revista Science sobre os efeitos do stress crónico no processo de tomada de decisões.

Concretamente, "ficámos a saber que um sector dos endocanabinóides activa uma cascata de sinalização que é modulada por dois outros neurotransmissores", assinalou.

Na perspectiva do neurocientista, a descoberta permitirá identificar "um conjunto de potenciais alvos moleculares para desenvolver estratégias que no futuro impeçam, ou até revertam, esses défices cognitivos associados ao uso de canabinóides".

O estudo dos investigadores espanhóis - realizado com ratinhos geneticamente modificados na Unidade de Neurofarmacologia do Departamento de Ciências Experimentais e da Saúde da Universidade Pompeu Fabra - mostra que os efeitos em causa do cannabis se devem a uma interrupção do processo de consolidação da memória.

De acordo com Andrés Ozaita, um dos coordenadores do estudo, se forem bloqueadas as vias de sinalização que o cannabis põe em marcha, "evitar-se-ão também os seus efeitos na memória".
